Yamauchi-Takeo, Saga, Japan

Yamauchi Exchange Overview

Yamauchi-machi, Sebastopol Sister City for more than two decades!

In 1985 Sebastopol World Friends began a sister city relationship with Yamauchi-machi, Japan. Home-stay exchanges each spring have given generations of students from each city a deeper understanding of cultural differences and similarities while creating lifetime friendships bridging the pacific ocean.

On March 1, 2006, Yamauchi-machi merged with Takeo-shi and Kitagata-machi to form the new city of Takeo.

Sustainable Development Exchange

August, 2011

Sebastopol World Friends has been selected to receive funding from the “Leading Asia: Renewing U.S. and Japan Sister City Networks.” This award is a tribute to the work and dedication of SWF volunteers and our community for efforts in fostering and strengthening cooperation and understanding between our city and Japanese Sister City – Yamauchi, and now Takeo City. With this funding, SWF will send a delegation to Takeo City, Japan, in November of this year with the goal of sharing best practices in Sustainable Development. Other goals are to establish ongoing communication about sustainability between the two cities, and brainstorm sustainability programs that can involve youth.

We've arrived!

Gotta keep this short because I need sleep, but wanted to post so everyone knew that we're safe and sound. We'll post more as soon as we can!

Update:
Want to see how awake we were on the bus to Yamauchi-Takeo?

Several more photos are attached, see below.

I think a marching band could have gone by and they wouldn't have noticed. It was a pretty exhausting trip. But we made it.

All the students did a great job helping move luggage at the airports, and also when we hit unexpectedly long lines at immigration control in Tokyo, the students did a great job of following instructions and really helped us make sure we made our flight to Fukuoka. Kudos to them.
